Dec 5th 2024

Pre-Departure Preparation

For many, Australia represents an amazing dream destination for a new life. The General Skilled Migration Program offers a way for skilled people to migrate to Australia. It welcomes those with the right qualifications and drive to become valued permanent residents. The practical process helps you contribute to Australia’s thriving communities and economy. It guides you every step of the way to calling Australia a new home. If you want a fresh start of opportunities, this program aims to achieve that goal for you.

Step-By-Step Process to Apply For an Australia PR Visa

Here are the steps that you should follow before starting your journey towards Australia PR:

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility

It’s essential to check if your occupation is listed under Australian Immigration’s eligible occupations. There are specific lists for different visas, and it’s crucial to match your occupation with the list for the visa you’re aiming for. If your occupation isn’t on the list, unfortunately, you won’t be eligible for a General Skilled Migration Visa.

Step 2: Skills Assessment

The next step is to get a positive Skills Assessment from the relevant authority for your occupation. Each profession has a designated Skills Assessment Authority with specific requirements, such as:

  • Engineers: Engineers Australia
  • IT Professionals: Australian Computer Society (ACS)
  • Nurses: Australian Nursing & Midwifery Accreditation Council
  • Marketing Professionals: VETASSESS

It is essential to familiarize yourself with the authority for your occupation and their requirements, which may include work experience, qualifications, and English proficiency.

Step 3: Points Test

The visas under the General Skilled Migration Program (189, 190, and 491) are points-tested. Applicants must meet the criteria and earn points in categories such as:

  • Age: (0 – 30) points, with a minimum age of 18 and a maximum of 45.
  • Academic Qualifications: (0 – 20) points, depending on your level of education.
  • Work Experience: (0 – 20) points, based on the years of experience in your nominated occupation and whether it was in Australia or abroad.
  • Proficiency in English: (0 – 20) points, determined by your English exam score.
  • Study in Australia: 5 points for a minimum two-year study leading to a Diploma or Trade Certificate.
  • Study in Low Population Areas of Australia: An additional (5 – 10) points for studying in Designated Regional Areas.
  • Language Translator Accreditation: 5 points for obtaining accreditation as a translator.
  • Skilled Spouse: (5 – 10) points if your spouse has a skilled occupation and competent English.
  • Single Applicants: 10 points to ensure they are not disadvantaged.
  • Professional Year: 5 points for completing a professional year in Australia.
